Averaging well over 100 shows per year, ‘Foreign Beggars’ are one of the most prolific and versatile Hip Hop outfits to emerge from the UK. Consisting of MC’s Metropolis and Orifice Vulgatron, Producer Dag Nabbit, Human Beat boxer Shlomo and DJ Nonames. With roots ranging from jazz and classical training, to years of writing recording and performing hip hop, death/power-metal and drum & bass the group’s varied experiences combine to create one of the most explosive live rap showcases on the planet. Individually, ‘Foreign Beggars’ have achieved a range high profile accomplishments from appearance s on Bjork’s ‘Medulla’ album and the Gorillaz single ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’, to remix production for Amp Fiddler and Corinne Bailey Rae, and touring the States with James Lavelle’s UNKLE outfit. Whilst also having collaborated with a slew of hip hop heavy weights including Stones Throw’s OhNo, Guilty Simpson, Wildchild and Dudley Perkins, producer supreme DJ Vadim, Dabrye, Scratch Perverts, Skinnyman, Task Force and Spain’s Griffi and Tote King they have worked from a host of other genres including Vex’d, Virus Sundicate, Natalie Williams, Noisia and Ram Record’s Subfocus. Shlomo has also created the worlds first Vocal Orchestra, and was made an “Artist in Residence” at the South Bank Centre at the young age of 22, Curator of the 2007 world beatbox convention in London and judges at the UK Beatbox championships and has performed with the likes of Bjork, Dizzee Rascal, The Specials & Damon Albarn. Championed on national radio by Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and Tim Westwood, Nonames and Orifice are now into their second year presenting a weekly hip hop and grime show on the BBC Asian Network. Television features include Channel 4, ITV and MTV, Shlomo Live on Jools Holland and Eastenders, and a live broadcast on the BBC from Glastonbury. Whilst running one of the most respected Hip Hop record labels in the UK “Dented Records”, and organizing events throughout the country, they haveperformed on stage and opened for Snoop Dogg, Amy Winehouse, Public Enemy, Pharoahe Monch, Iain Brown, Femi Kuti, Mark Ronson, Talib Kweli, Roni Size, Asian Dub Foundation, Pendulum, K’Naan, Wu Tang Clan, Kano, Masta Ace, Herbalizer, East 17! Roots Manuva, and many more
Heavily influenced by Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, Beggars & Thieves were among the countless pop-metal/hard rock hair bands that were formed on the East Coast in the late ‘80s. The New York outfit was never huge, although it has enjoyed a small following. Beggars & Thieves was formed in 1989, when lead singer Louie Merlino joined forces with guitarist Ronnie Mancuso, drummer Bobby Borg, and bassist Phil Soussan (who had played with one of the post-Black Sabbath backup bands that Ozzy Osbourne had as a solo artist in the ‘80s). After their formation, Beggars & Thieves started playing around New York, and had only played six shows when it landed a deal with Atlantic. In 1989, Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero were hired to produce Beggars & Thieves' self-titled debut album, which Atlantic released the following year. Many of the headbangers who heard that aggressive yet melodic CD agreed that Beggars & Thieves were hardly the most original or groundbreaking band in the world, but they also acknowledged that the New Yorkers' songs were hooky and infectious. After that album, Beggars & Thieves went through some personnel changes. Soussan and Borg left the band, and Mancuso and Barbiero decided to carry on without them. In 1991, a new three-person lineup was formed, one that consisted of Merlino on lead vocals, Mancuso on both bass and guitar, and newcomer Bobby Chouinard on drums. And it was also in 1991 that Beggars & Thieves left Atlantic and signed with Epic. With that new Merlino/Thompson/Chouinard lineup, the band recorded its second album, which probably would have come out in 1991 or 1992 were it not for office politics. Unfortunately, Beggars & Thieves got caught in the corporate crossfire at Epic, which dropped the band without releasing their second album. Finding themselves without a record deal, Beggars & Thieves didn't record for any more major labels in the ‘90s. And when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and the grunge movement exploded commercially in 1992 and 1993, the majors lost interest in the type of pop-metal/hard rock that Beggars & Thieves specialized in. Instead of looking for the next Axl Rose or the next Vince Neil, major-label A&R people were looking for the next Kurt Cobain or the next Eddie Vedder. But despite the commercial decline of pop-metal and hair bands, Beggars & Thieves kept plugging away. Eventually, their second album ( the one that Epic decided not to release ) saw the light of day. In 1997, Beggars & Thieves' sophomore effort, Look What You Create, was finally released independently (although it had limited distribution). And in 1999, they recorded The Grey Album, another independent release.
